How Chinese Businesses Are Bringing AI Tokens Into Everyday Life

Summary

AI tokens, the small units of text processed by models, are moving from technical infrastructure into everyday commerce in China. Daily token consumption in the country reached 500 trillion in mid-2026, up from 100 billion in early 2024, while Chinese open-source and open-weight models can cost 60% to 90% less than comparable offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. Lower prices are allowing businesses to test consumer-facing token packages. Moonshot AI partnered with the Agricultural Bank of China and American Express on a Kimi credit card that rewards spending with Kimi tokens plus agent and coding quotas; other cards offered up to 1.8 billion MiniMax tokens or up to 3 billion tokens for Alibaba’s Qwen models. Telecom operators are selling token allowances like mobile data, including China Telecom plans from 9.9 yuan a month for 10 million tokens and China Unicom business plans ranging from 6 million to 18 million tokens. Restaurants and cafes are using computing access as a promotion: Beijing’s AGI Bar offers unlimited local access to DeepSeek V4 Flash with a drink and Wi-Fi connection, while a dumpling restaurant gives customers 10 yuan of computing credits after meals. On Alibaba-owned Xianyu, sellers resell model access in token-based passes and subscriptions. In Guangzhou, a district-level “token loan” product lets banks assess AI startups partly through their token production and consumption when setting borrowing amounts. An analyst described these offerings as a supply-led experiment, noting that most users still encounter AI through apps rather than visible token balances.
