298 New National Standards Set Measures for AI and Related Industries
Summary
China’s market regulator and national standards authority have approved 298 important national standards, including 27 mandatory standards and 271 recommended standards. Forty-seven standards concern artificial intelligence, intelligent speech interaction and smart services, with applications spanning power systems, ports, petroleum and home products. The article argues that AI deployment increasingly depends not only on model capability, but also on common interfaces, repeatable testing, quality evaluation, safety requirements and procedures for handling failures. Mandatory standards must be followed and generally address health, safety, national security or environmental protection, while recommended standards are encouraged rather than universally compulsory. Even so, recommended standards can affect procurement, bidding, project acceptance and supply-chain cooperation, especially when companies promise to follow them contractually or publicly. In homes, shared interfaces and clearer interaction and safety requirements could reduce incompatibility among locks, appliances, speakers and robots. For enterprises, standardization may reduce repeated integration, custom development, acceptance disputes and compliance uncertainty, making AI projects easier to replicate across customers. The release also includes standards related to semiconductors, integrated circuits, information and communications, data, software and new materials, which the article presents as part of the broader industrial foundation for AI. The article cautions that publishing standards does not prove market scale or technical leadership: their impact will depend on adoption in products, procurement, testing and acceptance, as well as on implementation dates and the ability to measure performance under consistent conditions.
