ESA and Mistral Deepen Strategic Cooperation on AI

Summary

The European Space Agency (ESA) and Mistral signed a Letter of Intent in Paris on 16 September 2026 to establish a strategic framework for cooperation on artificial intelligence. The agreement combines Mistral’s AI models, cloud infrastructure and technical capabilities with ESA’s scientific, engineering and operational work. The organisations will explore applications for Earth observation, engineering analysis, mission design, knowledge access, repetitive-task automation and human-led technical decision-making. They will also examine deployment on European infrastructure with safeguards for security, resilience, traceability, auditability and protection of sensitive information. The cooperation is intended to support trusted and sovereign AI capabilities for the space sector while contributing to Europe’s technological resilience. It builds on existing initiatives including Orbit, a secure AI assistant for engineering activities, and EVE, an Earth-observation and Earth-science capability developed through ESA’s Φ-lab with European partners.
