A Design Framework for Human-AI Collaboration at Work

Summary

Generative AI is becoming part of modern work, but successful adoption depends not only on technical capability. This white paper presents a practical framework for designing human-AI collaboration around five connected areas: the human, AI system, task, organisation and wider societal environment. It describes what effective collaboration should look like, which conditions shape it, what requirements should be met and which design decisions organisations need to make. The authors illustrate the framework with a human-AI collaborative assembly system that uses a cobot. In the case study, abstract design requirements are translated into concrete collaboration features and evaluated in practice. The paper aims to provide organisations with a human-centred and responsible guide for creating AI-supported work arrangements that function well for both people and organisations.
