AI Industry Needs $6 Trillion in Annual Revenue by 2031 to Justify Data-Centre Boom, Bain Says

Summary

A Bain & Company report says the artificial intelligence industry may need nearly $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031 to justify the capital being deployed for data centres and related infrastructure. Bain estimates annual AI infrastructure spending could reach $1.5 trillion by then, including new facilities, capacity increases and upgrades to GPUs, memory and networking equipment. If infrastructure investment represents about a quarter of industry revenue, the market would need to approach $6 trillion annually. New product development is projected to provide about $4.2 trillion, with opportunities in search, advertising, autonomy and physical AI. Enterprise productivity would contribute an estimated $1 trillion to $1.4 trillion through software development, sales, marketing, customer service and IT operations, while consumer subscriptions and advertising could add $200 billion to $400 billion. Bain identifies the speed at which companies absorb AI as a new competitive variable and says leading AI labs are investing more than $9.75 billion in engineering models to accelerate adoption. The report also cites rapid data-centre growth, with facilities such as Meta’s Prometheus in Ohio projected to rise from 600MW and $24 billion in 2025 to as much as 9GW and $200 billion by 2030, according to Epoch AI data. Bain says power-grid capacity, chips, skilled workers, regulation and public opposition could constrain expansion, even as governments support AI infrastructure for economic and national-strategy reasons.
