AMD to Acquire World Models Startup World Labs for $8.2 Billion
Summary
AMD and World Labs announced that AMD will acquire the world-models company for $8.2 billion, with the transaction expected to close by the end of 2026 pending regulatory approval. Founded in 2024 by computer vision researcher Fei-Fei Li, Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall, World Labs raised $230 million, including funding from AMD. Its models aim to create useful, predictive simulations of the physical world. The company’s first publicly usable tool, Marble, generates small 3D spaces with Gaussian splats that can be exported for film production, game development, and other uses; later products such as Atlas target different applications. World Labs’ technology is also relevant to synthetic data generation for robot training, an area where Nvidia currently has a strong position. AMD has released its own open-source Micro-World model but has not matched Nvidia’s broader Cosmos stack and related applications. The acquisition will bring World Labs’ models and research staff into AMD: Li will become AMD’s executive vice president and chief scientist, while Johnson and Mildenhall will continue leading the team. AMD said the expertise will help it understand changing workloads in reasoning, robotics, simulation, and physical AI and shape future technology roadmaps. The companies had previously partnered, making the acquisition part of AMD’s effort to compete in an AI market dominated by Nvidia.
