GenOffice Launches an Open-Source AI Office Suite with CLI and MCP Support
Summary
GenOffice is a free, Apache-2.0 open-source office suite for macOS, Windows, and Linux that combines Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDF, Markdown, and HTML editors with an integrated AI agent. It opens and saves native .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files, using narrow patches so untouched file contents are preserved byte-for-byte; AI edits can appear as tracked changes, diffs, and rollback snapshots. Sheets supports live formulas and charts, while Slides can generate editable decks and the PDF editor can modify text in place or convert PDFs to Office formats on-device, including system OCR for scanned pages on macOS and Windows. The app indexes local document names, folders, and extracted text in SQLite, with optional reranking by TypeSafe Jev; reranking is off by default and sends excerpts from the top 20 hits to the selected provider when enabled. Users can sign in through Genspark or bring keys for numerous providers, including Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, and local OpenAI-compatible servers. GenOffice also ships a headless `genoffice` CLI, an agent skill, and MCP tools that let Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and other agents inspect, create, convert, read, and edit real Office files without opening the app. Document processing remains local, while configured cloud AI, search, and media calls may leave the machine.
