Meta Hires MongoDB CEO to Lead New Enterprise AI Business
Summary
Meta hired MongoDB CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai to lead Meta Enterprise Platform, a new business unit that Mark Zuckerberg described as a major pillar of the company. The unit will sell Meta’s AI stack to businesses, including the Muse agent, Muse API, Muse Code, and Meta Business Agent, which operates across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. Meta has not announced pricing or a launch schedule. Its planned Muse Confidential VM is intended to isolate customer instances so that even Meta cannot inspect them, with ongoing audits for customers. The strategy would turn Meta’s models, agents, infrastructure, developer tools, and privacy controls into an enterprise offering, but it places the company directly against OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft. Desai brings experience from ServiceNow, Cloudflare, and MongoDB, along with enterprise software, infrastructure, security, and developer-tool relationships that Meta has lacked. He reportedly left substantial MongoDB compensation behind, although Meta has not disclosed his new package. MongoDB shares fell more than 26% in early trading, wiping out roughly $8 billion in market value, while Meta shares slipped about 4%. MongoDB reinstated former CEO Dev Ittycheria as interim leader and began searching for a permanent replacement, while maintaining its financial guidance. Meta’s enterprise record is weak after shutting down Workplace and Horizon Workrooms, and enterprise buyers will expect procurement, security reviews, service agreements, and account management. The company also faces a strategic choice over model openness: Llama offered a relatively inexpensive, customizable option, while the Muse Spark models are closed. Meta could still leverage relationships with hundreds of millions of businesses through its consumer platforms, but the next tests will be pricing, named customers, the delivery and security of Confidential VM, and whether Desai can build an enterprise sales organization.
