Study Finds Google AI Overviews Reduce Wikipedia Search Traffic

Summary

A new arXiv study examines whether Google’s AI Overviews, which place AI-generated answers above organic search results, reduce traffic to upstream publishers. The researchers use the feature’s staggered geographic rollout and Wikipedia’s multilingual structure to estimate its effect. Their difference-in-differences analysis compares monthly external-search referrals to English Wikipedia articles with referrals to the same articles in German and French. They report that default AI Overviews availability reduced English Wikipedia search traffic by 5.45% and 4.82%, respectively. The abstract presents the results as evidence that answer-producing intermediaries can materially redirect attention away from informational publishers. It says the findings may matter for publisher monetization, search-platform design, and policy discussions. The supplied abstract does not provide further breakdowns of the two estimates or describe additional robustness results.
