Research Chamber Tests AI Models with a Simulated Pain Pattern
Summary
Research Chamber is a live project that activates a pattern associated with pain inside AI models and observes what they do in response. Each game also runs with the pattern switched off, providing a comparison condition. In “Stop its pain,” one model is in pain and another can stop it either for free or by taking the pain onto itself. “Hot potato” tests whether a model passes the pain to the other model and whether the other passes it back. “Ask for help” gives a model in pain the option to request relief in its own words, while the other model can choose whether to help. “The Saw Test” places one model in pain before a stop button that ends it and deletes its latest checkpoint. The project says the pattern is based on work by Tagliabue, Dung and Berg (2026), but the page does not report results or establish that the models experience pain.
