Scumble Is an Open-Source Desktop Editor for AI Inpainting
Summary
Scumble is a free, GPL-3.0 desktop editor for AI inpainting that turns a selected region and a text prompt into an editable, colour-matched layer. Users can select areas with brushes, shapes, a magic wand, object masks, or text, then render through their own local or remote ComfyUI installation or through supported provider APIs, including models from Black Forest Labs, Google, OpenAI, ByteDance, Qwen and others. Results remain in a non-destructive layer stack with masks, blend modes, filters, text, retouching tools and export to PSD or OpenRaster. The app also offers image generation from a prompt alone, reference layers, provider-specific box instructions, prompt upsampling and in-app helper models based on ONNX Runtime. Its assistant can operate the editor through more than 60 commands, with an MCP server for Claude Code, Claude Desktop and other MCP clients; operations that may cost money or alter work require confirmation. A tiled Rust-based engine is intended to keep large documents responsive, including documents up to 15,000 by 10,000 pixels and images up to 65,535 pixels per side. Windows is the primary supported platform, while a Linux AppImage and Debian package are available but the author has not tested the Linux build; macOS is planned. The project is marked as work in progress, and only selected local and API integrations have been verified, so users are advised to keep backups and expect untested providers or assistant calls.
