Healthcare Staff’s Awareness of Machine-Translation Risks in Medical Communication

Summary

This study examines how healthcare staff in the UK understand the risks of using machine translation, predominantly Google Translate, to communicate with patients across language barriers. Although such tools may support staff’s duty of care, uninformed use in high-stakes healthcare settings could affect patient safety. The researchers focus on medical abbreviations because they can already create serious risks when misused or misunderstood in a single language, with consequences ranging from temporary harm to death. In semi-structured interviews, 21 healthcare staff members from varied roles and specialties reviewed French and Spanish examples drawn from authoritative clinical corpora and translated with Google Translate. The researchers then analyzed the interviews qualitatively and conducted cross-analysis. The abstract describes the study design and research gap but does not report the substantive findings.
