Google Workspace Adds Native Markdown Support as AI Agents Drive Adoption

Summary

Google is adding native support for Markdown (.md) files across Google Docs and Drive. Workspace users will be able to open, edit, and collaborate on Markdown directly without first converting it into a Google Docs file. The files will render visually, including elements such as links and tables, instead of appearing as raw plain text. Google says this also preserves Docs features such as real-time editing and commenting for both people and AI agents. The company identifies the growing use of Markdown by AI agents and coding tools as a key reason for the change, describing Markdown as a common language between humans and agents. The update also fits Google’s broader Gemini strategy: Google said in April 2026 that Gemini could generate multiple file types, including Markdown. The rollout began on October 5, 2026, and all Google Workspace accounts are scheduled to receive it, although some users may wait up to 15 days before the feature appears.
