Toketer Adds Local AI Token and Cost Tracking to VS Code

Summary

Toketer is a free, open-source Visual Studio Code extension that places a live AI usage and cost meter in the editor, and also runs in Cursor, VSCodium, and other VS Code-based editors. It stores metadata locally, does not read or send code, files, or prompts, and computes costs offline from a bundled pricing table; refreshing prices from Toketer's API is optional. The extension can record exact model and token counts for prompts sent through its @toketer chat participant or VS Code's Language Model API. It also reads Claude Code's local session logs automatically when available, while GitHub Copilot usage is handled differently: live activity is estimated from agent edits and premium-request pricing, or exact figures can be imported periodically from a GitHub billing report. Estimates are marked with a tilde and an estimate label because native Copilot and Cursor chat usage is not exposed through public APIs. A cost panel shows session and daily totals, per-model breakdowns, and recent prompts, and companion tools can submit metadata through a command or deep link. The extension is zero-config for its automatic sources, requires no account or backend, and is distributed under the MIT license.
