Microsoft Unveils AI-Focused Surface Hardware and Windows Changes

Summary

At its first live event in two years, Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, and a set of Windows 11 changes centered on local AI and agentic workflows. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599, uses Nvidia’s RTX Spark SoC, offers configurations with 5,120- or 6,144-core Blackwell GPUs and up to 128GB of unified LPDDR5x memory, and is scheduled to ship on October 16. The $5,999 Spark Dev Box is aimed at frontier developers, combines 128GB of unified memory with an Nvidia RTX GPU, claims one petaflop of AI compute, and includes a developer-optimized Windows build. Microsoft said both systems will support local model testing and frameworks such as llama.cpp, along with models from the DeepSeek and Nvidia Nemotron families. Windows Copilot will be reorganized into Home, Code, and Autopilot tabs for general LLM interaction, prompt-assisted application development, and agent supervision. A new Windows Search experience is intended to let users describe system-level tasks and have them executed from the taskbar. Microsoft also announced Microsoft Execution Containers, a policy and sandboxing framework available to developers that can monitor agents, apply access guardrails, and route workloads to process, session, WSL, MicroVM, or other isolation backends. Microsoft calls the combined local-and-cloud approach “Hybrid Intelligence,” while the article notes that security and user-acceptance questions remain unresolved.
