Ecosia Drops Mistral for Chinese Open-Source AI Models

Summary

Berlin-based search engine Ecosia is dropping French AI provider Mistral and moving to open-source and open-weight models, including China’s Qwen, GLM and Kimi, through a partnership with AI platform Melious. Ecosia founder and CEO Christian Kroll said the company was disappointed with Mistral’s quality, which he described as roughly a year behind competing models, and said recurring server overloads caused technical problems. Ecosia had replaced OpenAI with Mistral in May. The company also questioned whether Mistral supports its goals of environmental responsibility and European technological sovereignty, citing France’s nuclear-heavy energy mix and Mistral’s foreign investment. Mistral co-founder Guillaume Lample urged Ecosia to test its newly released Large 4 model and emphasized model customization and access to model weights. Kroll said the new arrangement has roughly halved costs while improving quality and performance. He argued that Europe can build on increasingly capable open models rather than spend billions training frontier systems. The switch comes amid debate over Chinese models’ censorship, political bias and national-security implications. Kroll said such distortions could be addressed technically, while German AI Association executive Rasmus Rothe warned that overt censorship may be reduced through retraining but subtle biases embedded in training data are harder to remove.
