NSF AI Institute HAIC Develops Adaptive AI for Personalized Rehabilitation

Summary

The NSF AI Institute for Human-AI Cooperation (HAIC), led by the University of Delaware, is developing trustworthy AI that works as an adaptive teammate for clinicians and patients in rehabilitation and health care. The institute is supported by a $21.5 million, five-year award from the U.S. National Science Foundation and involves Delaware State University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Florida, and Princeton University, along with more than 40 academic, clinical, industry, government, and nonprofit partners. HAIC’s research covers human-AI cooperation, personalized rehabilitation, AI-enabled digital twins, intelligent rehabilitation robotics, clinical decision support, multimodal data integration, predictive analytics, and adaptive AI systems. Its clinical focus includes physical therapy, stroke and Parkinson’s rehabilitation, robotic prosthetics, and assistive technologies, with research embedded in real-world care. The institute says its systems are intended to strengthen clinical judgment rather than replace human expertise by helping clinicians interpret diverse sensor and patient data and adapt guidance to individual needs. HAIC also emphasizes ethics, responsible AI, education, and workforce development, including pathways for students and professionals entering AI-enabled health care. A digital twin and simulation environment is planned to represent structural and functional aspects of a patient and support interaction with AI-enabled rehabilitation devices.
