Rembrandt Offers a Free Cross-Platform Photo Editor with On-Device AI
Summary
Rembrandt is a free photo editor for macOS, Windows, and Linux that requires no account, subscription, or tracking for its core features. It supports RAW files from more than 1,000 cameras, albums, batch editing, masks, lens corrections, HDR and panorama merges, and exports using standard XMP sidecar files so the original photos are not changed. Its on-device AI includes natural-language adjustments, subject and depth masks, background replacement, refocusing, denoising, Super Resolution, and several automated looks. The natural-language editor uses a local vocabulary rather than a language model, while computational features run on the device GPU, including Metal on Apple silicon. Long-running jobs can be queued in small GPU slices, paused during editing or inactivity, and resumed after restarts. Users can run the application locally or self-host a browser-based server, with an optional LAN mode for other devices on the same network. Optional cloud synchronization is the only paid, account-based feature. The project is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, although the listed desktop builds are not yet code-signed.
