iimos Is a Local AI Agent That Can Rewrite Its Own Application

Summary

iimos is an open-source desktop agent that presents a single chat box and can rewrite the source code of its own UI, local server, tools, and base system prompt. Instead of producing a separate artifact, it changes the running application, rebuilds it, and reloads it. Demonstrations show it turning the interface into a Windows XP-style desktop, creating a crypto price desk that retrieves OKX quotes, refreshes them every minute, and sends system alerts, and becoming a text adventure that rolls dice for each move. The agent can also add a web-reading tool, although it cannot access the web until it creates such a tool itself. The project is designed to run entirely on the user’s machine: the application, code, and data remain local, with no account or cloud service required. Users supply an endpoint URL, API key, model name, and context-window size; any endpoint compatible with the OpenAI Responses API can be used. The repository says the API key is stored in a local mode-600 config file and sent only to the configured endpoint. Before each boot, the launcher takes a snapshot of the workspace. If a new version fails to start twice, it rolls back to the last known-good version while preserving the broken code on a crashed branch. A separate recovery window can roll back or factory-reset the application without loading its mutable app code. The immutable launcher handles workspace seeding, upgrades, bookkeeping, and reloads, while the mutable workspace contains the local server, model calls, agent loop, shell/read/write/edit tools, React and TypeScript UI, and prompt files. The project can be installed from a macOS Apple Silicon release or run from source with Node 22.5 or newer. Its demonstrations used DeepSeek V4 Flash, but the project is designed for user-supplied compatible models.
