2026 AI Search Readability Index Audits 50 Tech and DTC Brands
Summary
Crawlable audited 50 startup, SaaS, technology, and e-commerce sites on 11 October 2026 using its production audit engine, scoring raw-HTML readability, schema depth, llms.txt context architecture, and crawler governance. Of the 50 domains, 46 were measurable; Perplexity, Canva, Liquid I.V., and Bombas refused the crawler or returned an error and were excluded from averages. The measured sites averaged 51.5 out of 100, with a median of 55, and none reached the A grade of 90 or above; 43 of 46 scored below 70. Major SaaS and technology companies averaged 59.2, e-commerce and DTC brands 52.4, and YC or high-growth startups 43.1. The largest weakness was crawler governance, which averaged 2 of 20 points, followed by llms.txt context architecture at 6.3 of 20. Thirty-six of 46 sites named no AI crawler in robots.txt, although none blocked OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot on the home page; two blocked Amazonbot. Thirty-five sites served an llms.txt file, but only 14 passed Crawlable’s specification, while 11 served none. The audit also found 14 sites with at least one audited page delivered as an empty JavaScript shell, including 11 of 26 detected Next.js sites; v0.app had 37 of 40 audited pages in that state. Shopify’s automatically generated “Agent Instructions” accounted for eight rejected llms.txt files and was described as checkout guidance rather than catalog context. Only 27 of 46 sites had complete rich entity schema, while 12 had only basic or invalid markup. The study used up to 40 sitemap or homepage-linked pages per site, fetched once as raw HTML without JavaScript, under a 45-second budget. Crawlable cautions that sites can change and that refusal of its audit crawler does not establish how a site treats verified AI crawlers.
