How ChatGPT Helped Diagnose a 498-Day IPv6 Failure

Summary

An engineer investigating a “Node-XX is Down” alert found that the stateful cluster was healthy and the supposedly failed server was still running. SSH and monitoring checks were inconsistent: IPv6 interfaces appeared operational, yet network interfaces were repeatedly being removed and added, making manual checks sometimes pass. Because the engineer could not give an AI coding agent access to the serial console, ChatGPT acted as an interactive troubleshooting partner, receiving screenshots and suggesting one command at a time. ChatGPT first linked the symptoms to a systemd bug and recommended upgrading systemd, but it could not convincingly explain why other servers using the same systemd version were unaffected. A colleague then identified that the server had 498 days of uptime. Further investigation connected the failure to Linux’s `ifa_cacheinfo` structure, whose 32-bit interface creation timestamp is measured in hundredths of a second and can represent only about 497.1 days before overflowing. Rebooting the server eliminated the problem. The application itself remained unaffected because it used DPDK and bypassed the Linux kernel’s networking path. The author concludes that AI can accelerate difficult diagnosis, but human experience is still needed to challenge plausible explanations, verify root causes, and avoid risky production changes based on incomplete reasoning.
