Epic Games Reportedly Shifts Disney Project to an AI-First Development Model

Summary

Epic Games is reportedly shifting its $1.5 billion collaboration with Disney to an “AI first” development strategy. According to Bloomberg, internal messages say models such as Anthropic’s Claude would generate all code and guide full-AI workflows for art assets, with human developers managing and directing the results. The planned Marvel- and Star Wars-themed shooter, originally slated for March 2027, has been delayed indefinitely amid the transition, understaffing, and slower-than-expected development. Epic spokespersons and CEO Tim Sweeney described the change as AI-accelerated development intended to help teams create more and better work, rather than simply replacing employees. The pivot follows Epic’s earlier advocacy for broad AI use in game production, including Sweeney’s prediction that AI could let small teams build larger interactive worlds. It also comes after Epic laid off more than 1,000 employees in March and after an AI-voiced Darth Vader in Fortnite produced inappropriate and confusing responses before a hotfix. A survey of more than 2,300 game-industry professionals found that 36 percent used generative AI at work, but usage focused mainly on research and brainstorming rather than coding or prototyping. The report therefore places Epic’s proposed full-workflow approach well beyond the more limited adoption common among surveyed developers.
