Constrained Decoding Models Aim to Make Production AI Faster and Cheaper
Summary
Neal Patel introduces Constrained Decoding Models (CDMs), a new family of task-specific AI models designed for production workloads that need fast, consistent, affordable answers rather than free-form text generation. The architecture is described as reading an input once and avoiding the token-by-token generative loop used by large language models. Three CDMs are available: Classify returns calibrated probabilities and reasons for labels; Extract produces structured JSON with confidence scores and citations; and Summarize handles long text, images, or PDFs and returns summaries capped at 1,000 tokens. The models are claimed to accept 1 million multimodal input tokens, described as 31 times larger than Jev. On DecisionBench, CDMs are reported at 77.2%, compared with 72% for Jev. The announcement also claims they are 200 times faster and 467 times cheaper than frontier LLM APIs, with input priced at $0.05 per million tokens and free output, including for summarization. The models are said to be available through OpenRouter, Vercel, LiteLLM, LangChain, TrustedRouter, itsArthurAI, and useRouterPlus, with 50 million free input tokens offered for the first 50 hours.
