Microsoft Creates Xbox Labs to Explore AI-Powered Game Ports

Summary

Microsoft has created Xbox Labs, a small team of game makers, engineers, and scientists tasked with exploring how emerging technologies can change where and how games are played. The group will focus partly on the recent wave of decompilations and recompilations, in which modders have moved Windows games to Apple Silicon, browsers, and other hardware, sometimes using AI models to remix game code. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says the experiments could make older games easier to access and enable more people to become creators, while Xbox Labs will build in the open, learn from players and developers, and share tools and findings with the industry. Microsoft cites the overlap between coding and games as a reason to investigate AI agents: both involve software that can be written, run, and tested, and Sharma says people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games, about five times the estimated global time spent writing code. The initiative does not change Microsoft’s stated commitment to its hardware, games, communities, and intellectual property. However, the article notes an unresolved tension over unauthorized ports and the free distribution of games using Microsoft’s or other publishers’ IP; Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment before publication. The memo also says WebAssembly and WebGPU-based browser ports are approaching 90 percent global browser support.
