Ascenda Releases Open-Source Instrumentation for AI Coding Agents

Summary

Ascenda has released an Apache-2.0 open-source project for observing activity from AI coding agents. Collectors support Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and Windsurf, while an extension covers VS Code and Cursor editor activity. They normalize different hook systems into the experimental agent-event/v0 format, recording events such as prompts submitted, tool calls, test or build runs, waiting states, failures, context compaction, session duration, and concurrent agents. The default design is metadata-only: prompts, responses, source files, file contents, and command output are excluded, and an unpaired installation writes events locally to ~/.ascenda/events.jsonl and sends live signals only to local listeners. Users can feed the events into their own dashboards, internal tools, or research without an Ascenda account; pairing optionally sends events to Ascenda’s Flow app. The repository provides setup, status, doctor, and uninstall commands, supports local development against a mock backend, and documents agent-specific hook gaps rather than inferring missing data. It also includes a dependency-free event reader, shared packages, release manifests with checksums, and Sigstore build provenance. The project says the format is experimental and that no published study yet validates agent activity as a measure of workload. An associated benchmark is recruiting 200 teams of roughly two to 15 engineers, but the collectors themselves are available independently.
