Claude Code Shows Promise for Reverse-Engineering Hardware Support on Linux

Summary

Claude Code is beginning to show practical value in the tedious reverse engineering needed to bring unsupported hardware to Linux. Red Hat’s Christian Schaller used it after a Pustek 8200i negative photo scanner failed to work on Linux. The AI examined USB activity while accessing the vendor driver inside a Windows virtual machine, then helped produce a basic SANE driver that now works with the scanner. Schaller also used Claude Code to build a GNOME negative photo scanner application in Rust. In a separate effort, he asked it to address MIPI camera support on a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition, where the Sony sensor behind the Intel IPU7 produced dark images and other problems. The article presents these projects as early evidence that AI can assist with hardware reverse engineering and Linux driver debugging.
