14,000 Calls Suggest Human Receptionists Still Outperform AI on Intake Conversion

Summary

Bold Agent Kit analyzed approximately 14,000 inbound customer calls to compare AI-powered receptionists with human receptionists. About 6,343 calls were handled by AI agents and approximately 7,657 by humans. Human receptionists delivered roughly four times stronger inbound intake conversion performance, while AI-handled calls had a reported 700% higher incidence of callers hanging up before making meaningful progress. Humans missed approximately 15% more calls, giving AI a clear availability advantage. The findings suggest that answering more calls does not necessarily produce more business value, especially when intake requires understanding needs, building trust, collecting information, and guiding callers to the next step. The article also argues that falling call-center employment does not by itself prove that AI has improved customer service, because workforce reductions may reflect broader economic factors and do not establish causation. Its economics discussion says businesses should compare cost per successful outcome, not only staffing or cost per answered call; the profitability examples are illustrative rather than a study-generated ROI calculation. The analysis is observational, based on calls from participating Bold Agent Kit clients rather than a randomized controlled experiment, and the human and AI call groups may have differed in complexity, business type, configuration, or caller expectations. It therefore does not establish that humans outperform every AI system. The article presents hybrid deployment as a possible approach: AI can provide coverage, handle routine inquiries, collect preliminary information, and route calls, while people handle conversations requiring judgment, empathy, persuasion, or nuanced problem-solving. It calls for future evaluation of absolute conversion rates, revenue per call, call complexity, customer satisfaction, and hybrid workflows.
