Yum Brands Says AI Drive-Thru Tools Are Helping Retain Restaurant Workers

Summary

Yum! Brands Chief Legal Officer Erika Burkhardt said the company sees a tension between public opposition to AI infrastructure and the benefits its restaurant deployments provide to workers. She said AI-assisted drive-thru ordering reduces stressful points in the ordering process, helping employees focus on preparing products and serving customers, and has increased retention among restaurant team members. Taco Bell expanded Omilia Voice AI to nearly 900 drive-thru locations in July, although the fast-food industry has also experienced problems, including a customer who used an automated system to order 18,000 water cups. Burkhardt described the rollout as a learning process that can improve the technology and operations. DoorDash corporate affairs chief Elizabeth Jarvis-Shean said Dash Buddy, a real-time support tool for new delivery workers, answers about 95% of questions immediately because AI is embedded directly in the product workflow. Arm Chief Marketing Officer Ami Badani said AI has also helped the semiconductor company produce corporate communications and respond to industry announcements more quickly. The comments reflect a broader corporate effort to find practical automation uses that improve workflow efficiency and human productivity.
