Nix Offers a Self-Hosted Workspace with AI Tool Integration
Summary
Nix is an MIT-licensed, self-hosted workspace for one person or a small group, combining notes, tasks, habits, journals, files, calendars and numerical data in a single item tree. The same underlying content can be presented as lists, boards, calendars, timelines, galleries, spreadsheets, charts, habit trackers or finance ledgers. Users can define property schemas, formulas, rollups, templates and automations, while a companion can build requested structures and preview each plan before it runs. The system supports real-time collaborative notes through CRDT synchronization, presence, version history and password-locked subtrees. It also provides push notifications for due tasks and habits, plus two-way Google and Outlook calendar synchronization with a visible log. Data can be exported as lossless .nix archives, PDF, DOCX or Markdown, and the project supports several import formats. The JSON-based nixctl CLI and its MCP server allow AI tools to access the workspace through the same authorization path used by the web app and CLI. Nix can run locally with Docker and mise, or in production through Docker Compose, and includes a React PWA, ASP.NET Core API, PostgreSQL with row-level security and pgvector, a collaboration service, Go workers and OIDC login. It is designed to avoid vendor lock-in and can publish subtrees as static sites.
