Apple says its new Siri AI, powered by Apple Intelligence, will not be available to users in the European Union when iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 launch later this year. The company says EU regulators rejected all of its proposals for complying with the Digital Markets Act while allowing Siri AI to work safely alongside other virtual assistants. As a result, Apple currently has no timeline for bringing the feature to iPhone or iPad in the EU. EU users will also lack Siri AI on watchOS 27 because the watch experience requires a paired iPhone with Siri AI, while the feature will be available on macOS 27 and visionOS 27. The restriction also means developers in the EU cannot test or use the new Siri AI capabilities in apps targeting iOS 27, iPadOS 27, or watchOS 27. Apple says the release includes a dedicated app for revisiting conversations, expanded Visual Intelligence, writing tools, and a Siri mode in the iPhone Camera. The company describes Siri AI as relying on on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to protect user data. Apple argues that regulators’ interpretation of the DMA would require any virtual assistant to access private data and control other installed apps, including reading messages, making purchases, accessing files, and acting autonomously without continuous user visibility. Apple says those permissions could increase the impact of prompt-injection or other attacks that steal data or change files and account settings. To address the issue, it proposed a Trusted System Agent intermediary and an 18-month gradual rollout, but says the European Commission rejected the proposals. Apple says it will continue discussions, while the timing of an EU iPhone and iPad release remains unresolved.
