Walmart CEO John Furner says the company will continue its Every Day Low Prices principle as its shopping technology expands. He states that Walmart will not set different prices based on a customer’s income, shopping history, identity, urgency, time of day or what the company believes the customer can pay. Digital shelf labels are intended to display the correct price more consistently and reduce the time associates spend replacing paper tags. Furner says Sparky, Walmart’s AI shopping assistant, may use information customers choose to share to provide more personalized help, but that information will not be used to raise prices or hide lower-priced options that meet their needs. Customers will decide whether to provide additional details, while Walmart says it will explain how the information is used, protect it and respect those choices. The company also says people will continue to oversee pricing and that it will monitor and test its technology against these commitments.
