Connecting Captions is a live captioning and translation overlay for macOS that processes audio entirely on the device. The project is designed for meetings and conversations where users want to avoid network dependency, latency spikes, and sending sensitive audio to a third party; it continues working offline and makes no API calls. Its core is a low-latency, self-correcting pipeline that combines speech-to-text with translation. Sentence mode waits for a sentence boundary before translating, providing more context and better accuracy when languages use different word orders. Streaming mode translates word by word as speech arrives, reducing delay while accepting lower grammatical accuracy. The current implementation uses Whisper models, reports latency of about 200 milliseconds, and supports 25 languages on macOS. The developer is seeking feedback on the self-correction approach and the most useful applications, and provides the project code on GitHub.
